Quan An Ngon

Add: 18 Phan Boi Chau, Hanoi/ Tel: +84 4 942 8162

Some describe QAN as street food without the street, but the quality and options available on the extensive Vietnamese menu (with English translation) deserve better descriptors. Though setup in a beautiful old colonial townhouse with a large open courtyard hosting "vendors" cooking different northern and regional specialities, it is sometimes difficult to enjoy the surroundings given the din of the hoards of diners eating or waiting to be seated. Turnover is fast, and so is service, though never to the point of being abrupt. Mainly local diners attest to the food's authenticity. It helps, too, that the price is right.

Bleu de Thuy

Add: 28 Tong Duy Tan, Hoan Kiem Disct, Hanoi/ Tel: +84 4 928 5900

This gem of a restaurant is set in a gorgeous converted French colonial house. The main floor is done in warm yellows and blue trim. Upstairs offers terrace seating and on cooler nights, the side patio sandwiched between the restaurant and an exposed brick wall offers cozy private dining. Their imaginative dishes are crisp and light, and beautifully presented. An order of sea bass is topped with a tiger prawn wrapped in crisp strips of deep fried lotus and tastes even better than it looks.
